Foundation Skills Assessment – Grade 7

The Foundation Skills Assessment is an annual province-wide assessment of British Columbia students’ academic skills, and provides a snapshot of how well BC students are learning foundation skills in Reading Comprehension, Writing, and Numeracy.

The main purpose of the assessment is to help the province, school districts, schools and school planning councils evaluate how well students are achieving basic skills, and make plans to improve student achievement. FSA is designed and developed by British Columbia educators. The skills tested are linked to the provincial curriculum and provincial performance standards.

The assessment is administered annually to Grade 4 and 7 students in public and provincially funded independent schools.

For Bert Bowes Grade 7 students, the administration dates will be scheduled between January 18th and February 5th.

Two Additional Non-Instructional Days

The Ministry of Education, with input from both educators and the public, has worked to define the essential elements of a great education. The result is the BC Education Plan and it is the basis for redesigning the approach and content of BC’s curriculum. Effective September 1, 2016, the redesigned curriculum will be implemented for all students in Kindergarten to Grade 9. In preparation for these changes, two Non-Instructional Days have been added to this school year; Friday, February 26th, 2016 and Monday, May 16th, 2016. There will be no school for students on these days as teachers and administrators will be using them to plan and prepare for the new curriculum.

A public meeting will be held at the School Board Office on Wednesday, January 27, 2016, at 7:00 pm. The meeting will feature a presentation about the new curriculum and give everyone an opportunity to ask questions.

Letter from Assistant Superintendent, Stephen Petrucci, regarding the Non-Instructional Days.

Coats for Kids Winter Gear Drive

The Leadership class is organizing a Winter Gear Drive to support the local Coats for Kids. Bring in new or gently used coats, snow pants, mittens, touques, or scarves to give to local people who need something warm to wear this winter. Drop off your items to the table set up outside the student lounge during lunch from Wednesday November 18 until Thursday November 26. For every item donated, your name will be entered to win a secret prize. THEN, on Monday November 30th we will have an assembly during TAG (8:50-9:15 am) to celebrate all that was donated and distribute the prizes. If you, or someone you know, would benefit from receiving any of these clothing items, please come see Ms. Carlstrom or email ecarlstrom@prn.bc.ca

Students for Change is at it Again!

These past two months have gone by so quickly and the Students for Change group has participated in the We Scare Hunger initiative and collected over 500 items of food for the Women’s Resource Society in FSJ, as well as, participated in the We Are Silent initiative which required them to not talk for an entire day to stand up for those who do not have a voice. Some of the causes they were passionate about were: animal rights, students who are unable to attend school, and children who are unable to play.  We are very proud of our Students for Change group and we are looking forward to their next initiative in December — We Bake for Change!   Please look up Free the Children to find out more about our program!
